The Angel Cuesta Toro carries more than a century of history in its hands. Named for Angel Cuesta — the Spanish-born co-founder of the legendary Cuesta-Rey brand, personal friend of King Alfonso XIII, and one of the great architects of Tampa's golden age of cigar manufacturing — this cigar is handmade at J.C. Newman's El Reloj factory in Tampa, Florida, the same factory floor where generations of Cuban exiles and master rollers built an American cigar tradition that endures to this day. Only two rollers work the Angel Cuesta line, producing no more than 150 cigars per day in El Reloj's historic American Room — a pace that prioritizes craftsmanship above everything else.
The blend is anchored by an Ecuadorian Havana Rosado wrapper — a silky, caramel-hued leaf with a fine oiliness and delicate veins that drapes over aged binder and filler tobaccos sourced from three continents. J.C. Newman keeps the origins of the binder and filler close to the chest, but the quality is evident immediately in the construction: tight seams, a signature pigtail cap, an open foot, and a draw that is effortlessly smooth from first light to last. Each cigar is packed in cabinets of 20 and distributed exclusively to select premium retailers — a deliberate decision to keep Angel Cuesta exactly where its namesake would have wanted it.
In the smoke, the Rosado wrapper's natural sweetness leads with notes of fresh tobacco, fruit, and a gentle earthiness that grounds the profile without heavying it. Cedar develops cleanly through the middle, and black pepper arrives in the back half with just enough presence to add complexity without disrupting the elegance. Medium in body, refined in character, and finished with a long, clean close — a cigar worthy of the name on the band and the factory floor where it was born.
