The SAVAGES Malpensante — loosely translated as "the cynic" — is Robert Caldwell's Crafted & Curated homage to the original SAVAGES line, which went dark after the 2022 Tabacalera William Ventura fire. Rather than attempt a straight revival, Caldwell took the opportunity to build something new under the SAVAGES banner: a 6×54 Toro Extra rolled at Tabacalera Mina del Rey in the Dominican Republic, using an Ecuadorian Habano 2000 wrapper, a Sumatran-seed binder, and Dominican long-filler. Limited to just 400 boxes of 10, it's a small-batch release in the truest sense — once it's gone, it's gone.
The Ecuadorian Habano 2000 wrapper brings the characteristic oiliness and natural spice of the Habano seed grown under Ecuador's equatorial shade conditions — a silky, slightly dark leaf that burns clean and even across the full 6×54 length. The Sumatran-seed binder adds a savory, earthy depth that bridges the wrapper's spice with the Dominican filler's softer, rounder character underneath. The result is a blend with more nuance and complexity than a single-origin construction would deliver, built with the same attention to sourcing that defines the Crafted & Curated series.
Flavor-wise you're getting cedar and leather up front, nuts and subtle fruit notes developing through the middle, and a smooth, spicy finish that finishes clean with a touch of sweetness. Medium-full in body, refined in delivery, and built to remind SAVAGES fans what they've been missing — while giving newer smokers a very good reason to find out what the fuss was about. Grab them while they're here.
