Founded in Dublin and carrying patents that date to 1890, Peterson built its reputation on the System — Charles Peterson’s ingenious engineering for a cooler, drier smoke — and the Deluxe stamp has always marked its highest tier. This year’s release dresses that pedigree for the season: a rich crimson-and-black contrast rustication across the stummel, a signature P-Lip mouthpiece, and, in place of the Deluxe line’s usual sterling silver, a broad shining copper mount that gives the holiday edition its festive glow. The shape is the 12.5, one of Peterson’s most compact System pipes — a small, pocket-friendly bent Billiard with a gently tapered, rounded bowl, yet one that keeps the stout shank and muscular transition of the house style intact.

What sets a System pipe apart lies mostly out of sight. Three elements work together: an army mount, the one visible piece, which lets the stem be drawn even while the pipe is hot and reinforces the shank; an internal reservoir at the base of the shank that collects condensing moisture away from the smoke; and the graduated-bore P-Lip, whose button vents upward to carry smoke toward the roof of the mouth rather than across the tongue. The result is a noticeably cooler, drier, gentler draw that spares the palate.
