Few traditions in pipedom are as cherished as the Peterson Christmas pipe, and the 2026 edition arrives in the marque’s most storied line. Founded in Dublin and carrying patents that date to 1890, Peterson built its reputation on the System — Charles Peterson’s ingenious engineering for a cooler, drier smoke — and the Deluxe stamp has always marked its highest tier. This year’s release dresses that pedigree for the season: a rich crimson-and-black contrast rustication across the stummel, a signature P-Lip mouthpiece, and, in place of the Deluxe line’s usual sterling silver, a broad shining copper mount that gives the holiday edition its festive glow. The shape is the 9s, one of Peterson’s largest and most robustly built bent Billiards — a muscular design with stout, insulating bowl walls, a spacious chamber, and the thick shank and tight transition that define the house style, carried on a generous bend that keeps it well balanced at the teeth.
What sets a System pipe apart lies mostly out of sight. Three elements work together: an army mount, the one visible piece, which lets the stem be drawn even while the pipe is hot and reinforces the shank; an internal reservoir at the base of the shank that collects condensing moisture away from the smoke; and the graduated-bore P-Lip, whose button vents upward to carry smoke toward the roof of the mouth rather than across the tongue. The result is a noticeably cooler, drier, gentler draw that spares the palate over a long bowl — and the 9s’s deep, generous chamber is built for exactly that kind of unhurried sit, substantial in hand yet easy to clench thanks to its full bend. Finished in Ireland and offered only for the season, it’s a commanding everyday smoker for the System devotee and a handsome prize for the collector marking the year.
